11-01-09_ Lord of the Shrimps _IMG_2715.jpg

A moray eel peers out from a crevice, surrounded by watchful shrimp. Even with the photographer's approach, the moray seems to have the undivided attention of all the shrimp in the scene. Shrimp visible in the picture include camel shrimp, red-striped cleaner shrimp (also and more formally known as "scarlet skunk cleaner shrimp"), and ordinary spotted cleaner (reef) shrimp. The shrimp at lower left are camel shrimp (also known as dancing shrimp or candy shrimp); they eat detritus but do not clean other animals (unlike the peppermint shrimp, which is a "cleaner"). The yellow-red shrimp to the right and the semi-transparent shrimp around the moray are all cleaners; most likely they are hoping to climb onto the moray to clean off parasites. (In the event, my lights disturbed the moray and it withdrew, so I never knew if it got cleaned or not.)
