A Hindu worshipper and his son came to look at the tourists parading along the lake at Cundikuning, on Bali, Indonesia. We could tell from the looks on their faces that these people were happy to see and interact with us. Even though were were just outside the wall and the hubub of all the tourists could not have been quiet, it was not too serious for us to be involved; we were not intruding. The Hindu temple of Ulun Danu at Candikuning is one of the iconic images of Bali, Indonesia. Located in the high hills of the Bedugul, about 30 miles north of Bali's capital city of Denpasar, the temple is built on the shores of the crater Lake Bratan (formed from the sunken crater of a long-dormant volcano). Much of the inner precincts of the temple is closed to the (non-Hindu) public, but the gardens are spectacular and feature fabulous shrines, statuary, and views.
