The lionfish is a scourge that does not belong in the Caribbean Sea. It is not indigenous to these waters, has no natural predators here, and represents a very real danger to the reefs and natural ecology of the Caribbean reef ecosystem. Scientists speculate the fish may have been accidentally introduced into the Caribbean in a ships' bilge or ballast water. "The Flames" dive site, Costa Maya, Mexico.
